The Northern
Land Council has a Full Council comprising 78
members, elected and nominated by Aboriginal people and
Aboriginal organisations, and five co-opted women positions.
Elections are held every three years, including the
election of the Chairperson, Deputy Chairperson and members
of the Executive, comprising a representative from each of
the Land Council's seven regions.
Depending on the size of a region, it may have up to four
positions on the Full Council.
The Chairman is a full-time employee of the Council.
Full Council
The Full Council normally meets twice a year to determine
policy which directs the work of staff, and to review and ratify
agreements between traditional landowners and developers wanting
to use Aboriginal land.
Executive Council
Executive meetings are held in between Full Council meetings, and
the Executive Council - consisting of seven members - is
responsible for implementing the priorities of the Full Council.
Regional Councils
The Full Council is also divided into seven Regional Councils.
These meetings are held in various places within their regions and
are normally open to all Aboriginal people in the region, however
the right to vote and hold elected office is reserved for members.
Regional Council meetings are held four times a
year. They have delegated responsibility for decisions over
local issues, such as short term land use agreements, and make recommendations
to the Full Council.
Women's Committee
The Women's Committee consists of those women elected to the Full
Council plus another five co-opted women councillors. This
committee plays an increasingly important role in making sure that
women are actively involved in land council business.
