It should be made clear that the primary focus of our Jobs and Careers Service is not to place Aboriginal people in short-term jobs or provide training if there is no guaranteed, real job at the end: this will not achieve the local Aboriginal people's stated goal of using their land to gain economic independence and improve their lives and the lives of future generations. |
Our aim is to build a skilled workforce of Aboriginal people who are ready to take up a variety of jobs and careers. We are doing this through our successful 5Ps model (see links below).
This is neither a quick nor easy task: it takes time, determination and resources. However, it is worth it. In the words of self-labeled economic rationalist, Tony Harris:
“Let us be careful about economic development. Let us not just see it in a figure of dollars per capita, but let us try and see it as the development of society as well.” (keynote speaker at NT Economic Summit - 2015: Moving the Territory Ahead - Darwin, 23/11/05. www.nt.gov./au/ntsummit.)
To this end, negotiating real jobs for Aboriginal people in exchange for access to their land, forms an intergral part of agreements made on major projects and through industry strategies.
