Jobs, Training and Careers

Aboriginal workers

It should be made clear that the primary focus of our Jobs and Careers Service is not to place Aboriginal people in short-term jobs or provide training if there is no guaranteed, real job at the end: this will not achieve the local Aboriginal people's stated goal of using their land to gain economic independence and improve their lives and the lives of future generations.

Our aim is to build a skilled workforce of Aboriginal people who are ready to take up a variety of jobs and careers. We are doing this through our successful 5Ps model (see links below).

This is neither a quick nor easy task: it takes time, determination and resources. However, it is worth it. In the words of self-labeled economic rationalist, Tony Harris:

“Let us be careful about economic development. Let us not just see it in a figure of dollars per capita, but let us try and see it as the development of society as well.” (keynote speaker at NT Economic Summit - 2015: Moving the Territory Ahead - Darwin, 23/11/05. www.nt.gov./au/ntsummit.)

To this end, negotiating real jobs for Aboriginal people in exchange for access to their land, forms an intergral part of agreements made on major projects and through industry strategies.
