NLC saddened by elder’s passing

Posted: Fri, September 09, 2011

Northern Land Council Chairman Wali Wunungmurra has expressed his sadness following the passing of long-serving Full Council member Kumanjayi Napurrula Lauder-Dixon.

A senior elder of the Ngapa clan group from Muckaty Station, Kumanjayi Napurrula Lauder-Dixon
died late last month, following a lengthy battle with illness.

Mr Wunungmurra said news of Kumanjayi Lauder-Dixon’s passing had deeply-affected members and
staff at the NLC.

“She was a passionate advocate for her peoples and always spoke her mind at land council meetings,”
he said.

“Kumanjayi Lauder-Dixon was also a tireless worker in the Aboriginal health sector.”

Mr Wunungmurra said legal issues raised in Federal Court proceedings against the nomination of
Ngapa land for consideration as a nuclear waste repository would not be affected by Kumanjayi
Lauder-Dixon’s passing.

A funeral service for Kumanjayi Lauder-Dixon will be held next week.
