NLC welcomes Land Commissioner inquiry

Posted: Wed, April 20, 2011

Northern Land Council Chief Executive Mr Kim Hill has welcomed the decision by Federal Indigenous Affairs Minister Jenny Macklin to refer the application for a new land council in the Top End of the Northern Territory to the Aboriginal Land Commissioner.

The Hon Howard Olney AO QC has been appointed to hold an inquiry into the proposal for a
Katherine Regional Land Council, reporting back to Minister Macklin by the end of July.

Mr Hill said the appointment of the Hon Howard Olney AO QC and his inquiry’s wide-ranging terms
of reference would ensure Minister Macklin would have all the information needed to make an
informed decision on the proposal for a new land council.

“The NLC welcomes this inquiry and understands its part of the process the Minister is following,” he
said.

"The NLC will continue to get on with its core functions, as set out under the Aboriginal Land Rights
(Northern Territory) Act 1976 while this inquiry takes place.”
