NLC welcomes rental commitment

Posted: Wed, November 23, 2011

Northern Land Council (NLC) Chairman Wali Wunungmurra has welcomed today’s commitment from the Northern Territory Government to pay rent for its assets on Aboriginal land.

The Minister for Indigenous Policy Malarrndirri McCarthy made the announcement during question
time in Northern Territory Parliament this afternoon.

Mr Wunungmurra said, while overdue, the government’s commitment to pay rent on its assets on
Aboriginal land was a great outcome for Aboriginal peoples living in the NLC’s seven regions.

“I commend the Chief Minister and his Cabinet for taking this approach,” he said.

“It’s a decision which was based on fairness and the money generated through rental payments will
help drive many important community projects in remote areas.”

Mr Wunungmurra welcomed news that rental payments would be formulated through an independent
valuer.

He said the Northern Territory Government’s decision would increase pressure on the Commonwealth
and local governments to pay fair rent for their assets on Aboriginal land.
