State funeral for Mr Wunungmurra

THE Northern Territory Government will hold a State funeral for former Chairman of the Northern Land Council, Mr Wunungmurra, who passed away on 7 August, aged 70.

Statement from the NT Government follows:

The family of late former Northern Land Council chairman Mr Wunungmurra have accepted the Northern Territory Government’s offer of a State Memorial Service.

The service will be held at Rika Park, Yirrkala Community (via Nhulunbuy) at 10am on Friday 4 September.

As a signatory to the 1963 Yirrkala Bark Petitions, Mr Wunungmurra was a champion of Aboriginal rights who worked tirelessly for Indigenous Territorians, their land and their culture throughout his lifetime.

A State Memorial Service is a fitting way to remember a very senior Aboriginal leader who was widely respected not just throughout the Northern Territory, but right around Australia.

The Northern Land Council advises that Yirrkala, is on Aboriginal land. A permit is not required for attendees who fly to Gove and drive directly to Yirrkala.

A permit is not required for attendees who fly to Gove and drive directly to Yirrkala.

Those who intend to travel by road will need to respect the Traditional Aboriginal Owners of the area by applying for a permit through the Northern Land Council.

A permit application can be accessed via the NLC website on www.nlc.org.au or by contacting the Permits Officer on 08 8920 5178. Permits for attendance at the Memorial Service will be automatically granted for entry and exit via the Central Arnhem Road.
