WDR consultations ongoing

Posted: Tue, November 22, 2011

The Northern Land Council has been notified of an iron ore mine proposal by Western Desert Resources, which includes a proposed infrastructure corridor for transporting the iron ore by pipeline.

The proposal concerns land in relation to which native title has been determined to exist or is claimed
under the Native Title Act 1993 (Cth), including St Vidgeon Station, and also involves Aboriginal land
granted under the Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Act 1976 (Cth), including the Marra
Aboriginal Land Trust.

In accordance with its statutory functions, the NLC has commenced consultations with traditional
owners in relation to Western Desert Resources’ proposal.

The consultations are incomplete and further meetings will be conducted into 2012.

Other proposals exist in the region, including the establishment of a National Park.
