The Northern Land Council (NLC) is an independent statutory authority of the Commonwealth responsible for assisting Aboriginal peoples in the Top End of the Northern Territory to acquire and manage their traditional lands and seas. The NLC is a large and dynamic Aboriginal organisation with a specialised legal practice looking after a broad range of legal functions that NLC undertakes on a daily basis - particularly issues involving land and sea claims, commercial land use, mining and leasing agreements. The NLC’s legal branch is currently conducting the leading test case in relation to native title compensation in the Full Federal Court of Australia. NLC’s legal team provides legal advice in relation to the Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Act 1976 (Cth) (ALRA), the Native Title Act 1993 (Cth) and other legislation and law affecting relevant Aboriginal peoples and groups in the NLC’s jurisdiction.
We are seeking a full time and experienced solicitor to add to our vibrant team which currently consists of the Principal Legal Officer, two Legal Practice Managers (one for each of ALRA and Native Title) and seven solicitors.
The key focus of this role is to represent, assist and advise Traditional Owners in matters arising from the acquisition, use, occupation and management of their land under ALRA and the Native Title Act. Working with a team of lawyers, you will use your strong communication skills to engage in effective consultations and represent Traditional Owners, native title holders and the NLC at meetings and in negotiations with government and third parties. You will be working in an exciting, challenging and dynamic environment with excellent career development opportunities. Attractive remuneration including relocation assistance and a range of additional benefits is offered. Applicants with substantive litigation experience especially in the Federal Court of Australia will be highly regarded.
