The Northern Land Council (NLC) is an independent statutory authority of the Commonwealth responsible for assisting Aboriginal peoples in the Top End of the Northern Territory to acquire and manage their traditional lands and seas.

We are seeking a Legal Practice Manager - Land Rights, Minerals and Energy to add to our vibrant legal team comprising a Principal Legal Officer, two Legal Practice Managers (one for each of Land Rights, Mining and Energy and Native Title), twelve solicitors, a contracts administrator, a paralegal and three administrative assistants. 

The Legal Practice Manager - Land Rights, Minerals and Energy is responsible for overseeing and managing the NLC legal practice in relation to land use agreements under the Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Act (Cth) 1976 (ALRA) and minerals and energy matters under ALRA and the Native Title Act 1993 (Cth).

Working with both lawyers and other professionals in a cross-cultural organisation, you will use your professional judgement and highly developed communication and interpersonal skills to engage in effective consultation and represent, assist and advise Traditional Aboriginal Owners and the NLC in matters arising from the acquisition, use, occupation and management of their lands.

Your demonstrated experience in the supervision and development of staff will ensure the smooth operation of the NLC’s legal practice and the effective delivery of the NLC’s statutory functions. 

The successful applicant will be a qualified legal practitioner admitted to practice in the Supreme Court of a State or Territory of Australia, with a minimum 5 year’s post admission experience in commercial legal practice. Experience in any of property, commercial, corporate, litigation and energy and resources law is highly desirable.
