The Northern Land Council welcomes the appointment of the Hon. Natasha Fyles as Chief Minister of the Northern Territory.

“I look forward to working with Ms Fyles as the new Chief Minister and continuing the positive working relationship that I had with the outgoing Chief Minister Michael Gunner,” said NLC Chairman Samuel Bush-Blanasi.

“Ms Fyles is Territory born, with solid connections throughout the NT, including with Traditional Owners.

“Ms Fyles knows that having Aboriginal representatives involved in decision making is the best way to improve the lives of our mob and it is the only way to prevent unsuccessful initiatives that we have seen in the past.

“Our mob need a real say over their lives and we have to be at the negotiating table. We need someone in the NT’s top job who will respect us and understand our communities and I’m confident that the new Chief Minister will listen to our mob when it comes to land rights, housing, health, justice and education and employment.”

Mr Bush-Blanasi said the NLC worked closely with Ms Fyles as NT Health Minister.

“During the Covid pandemic I appreciated Ms Fyles’ and the Labor Government’s efforts to protect our mob from the virus – to restrict the movements of visitors in and out of remote communities and to encourage everyone to get the jab.”

“I look forward to commencing work with Ms Fyles in her new role and I would welcome her attendance at the NLC next Full Council meeting later this year.”
