Cherry Wulumirr Daniels OAM chose to share her joy of being awarded an Order of Australia in the 2016 Queens Birthday Honours List with her family and community of Ngukurr on 26 October. And so in front of a cheering crowd at the Ngukurr School she was formally handed her Order of Australia medal by the Administrator of the Northern Territory, the Hon. John Hardy OAM

Three Northern Territory Aboriginal peak organisations say they are bitterly disappointed that the Prime Minister has ignored their request to be consulted about the terms of reference for the Royal Commission into child protection and youth detention in the Northern Territory, and utterly reject his choice of former NT Chief Justice Brian Martin as the Royal Commissioner.

The Federal Court has recognised the rights of the Rrumburriya Borroloola people (the traditional owners of Borroloola and members of the wider Yanyuwa group) to exclusive possession over vacant crown land in the town, and to take and use resources for any purpose including commercial purposes – a so-called “right to trade”.
