Land tenure not the problem

Posted: Mon, March 09, 2015

THE Northern Land Council has disputed claims by the Northern Territory Health Minister, John Elferink, that land tenure issues have held up construction of remote health clinics on Aboriginal land, or on land covered by Native Title.

NLC CEO Joe Morrison said the NLC has been unfairly snared in a political argument between Mr Elferink and Labor Senator Nova Peris.

At the weekend, Mr Elferink said Senator Peris had “slapped the Northern Territory Government for delays in the building of clinics”.

Mr Elferink then said, “Some of the hold-ups are around the land tenure issues for some of the clinics.”

Mr Morrison said the NLC works closely with the NT Government’s Land Tenure Unit and efficiently processes requests for constructing facilities like health clinics.

“The only outstanding request is for a new clinic at Numbulwar, and that was received only this year,” Mr Morrison said.

“We will be consulting with the community at Numbulwar as soon as the weather allows, and the NT Government knows that timetable.”
