NLC Chairman saddened at Mr Yunupingu’s passing

NORTHERN Land Council Chairman, Wali Wunungmurra, has expressed his sadness at the passing of his long-time friend, former lead singer of Yothu Yindi, Mr Yunupingu.

“It is very sad to hear of his passing. I want to send my deep condolences to his immediate family, the Yunupingu clan and the Yirrkala community,” Mr Wunungmurra said.

“When I heard the news I couldn’t believe it. Having the sickness he had, I used to visit him when I could to comfort him and his family.”

Mr Wunungmurra paid tribute to his life-long friend.

“He was a close friend of mine. He was an outstanding teacher, educator and principal of Yirrkala school,” Mr Wunungmurra said.

“He led the Yirrkala school through the innovative two-way learning model of education, placing the school at the forefront of progressive Indigenous education. He achieved a lot in his time

“His music took him all over the world. He showed the world Aboriginal culture and music as an outstanding ambassador for Yolngu culture and we’re all very proud of him.

“He has done so much for his community and he did so much for us all, white and black, and we will all miss him greatly.”
