Tribute to the late Kwementyaye Tilmouth
Vale Kwementyaye Tilmouth 1952-2015
THE Northern Land Council is deeply saddened by the news of the death of Kwementyaye Tilmouth, a former Director of the Central Land Council.
NLC Chairman Sam Bush-Blanasi said Kwementyaye was a great champion of Aboriginal peoples’ rights, and maintained that cause until his untimely death at the weekend.
“Only in recent weeks he was offering to advise the NLC, free of charge, on issues of economic development and land use,” Mr Bush-Blanasi said.
“Kwementyaye’s advice was always fearless, and he was unsparing in his criticism of all politicians and public officials who he thought were out to curtail the rights, especially land rights, of Aboriginal people.
“He was a vigorous defender of the Northern Territory Aboriginal Land Rights Act, and I well remember how he campaigned tirelessly against recommendations from the Reeves Review of the Act during the early years of the Howard Government.
“Aboriginal people in the Northern Territory have lost a great campaigner. Like so many other Aboriginal people, he has been taken far too young.
“On behalf of the Full Council and staff of the NLC, I extend my heartfelt condolences to Kwementyaye’s family.”
