NLC Statement on resignation of Member for Mulka Yiŋiya Guyula

The Northern Land Council is deeply saddened by the departure of Yiŋiya Mark Guyula from the Northern Territory Parliament. Mr Guyula has served a ten-year tenure as the Member for Mulka electorate and was an independent member for North East Arnhem Land, truly representing the Yolŋu people.
Mr Guyula’s decision has shaken people right across the Northern Territory.
The Northern Land Council stands in solidarity with Mr Guyula, who has fought tirelessly for Yolŋu and Aboriginal rights right across the Territory.
Northern Land Council Chair, Mr Matthew Ryan says that Mr Guyula’s reason to leave reflects the difficulties of working with the current Northern Territory Government that has continuously attacked safeguards and rights of Aboriginal Territorians.
“Mr Guyula’s resignation is a huge loss in NT Parliament and for all Territorians. He is a man who has continuously stood up for what is right.
“No matter who was in government, he persevered in holding the government of the day to account - for better housing, improved health and reliable transport services for people who live in one of the most remote parts of Australia.
“His legacy will live on.
“The resignations by people of high standing in the community, from positions in Parliament and across the Northern Territory Government, is a warning that this government needs to do better. We have lost leaders of integrity and commitment, leaders who have dedicated themselves to protecting the rights and interests of Territorians.
“We urge the Territory government to listen to Mr Guyula's call – to work in partnership with Aboriginal people. Work with us, not against us.”
